Trim sending wire worn down by steering joint. Common problem?

I lost my trim-gauge function last trip out. Trim still went up and down, but I had to guestimate or eyeball it up and down.

I noticed that it would work if I went straight or turned one way, but if I even nudged the steering wheel the other way, the gauge would jump all the way up (dead).

Well, I finally got a chance to get the boat out and look. The two-wire-connector from the sending unit was twisted up, and pressed right against the steering shaft knuckle. It was rubbing the connector back and forth and twisting it around. Finally ate through the wire insulation, and when it finally grounded out, I would lose my trim gauge.

Is this common?

Anyway, pulled the wire connector out, untwisted the wires, taped up the exposed wire, and wire-tied the whole thing away from moving parts, and working fine now.
