Re: Trim Sending unit
I just took my sending unit apart yesterday. If you are a little technically knowledgeable you can do this. There is a potentiometer encased in silicone in the plastic housing. It is an Allen-Bradley water-tight pot. Allen-Bradley no longer makes this pot, but sold the copyright to another brand. I found one at Great Lakes Automation in Grand Rapids, Mi. Their number is 616-583-1564The part no. is 53C1-1K. You should be able to call your local A-B supplier, i'm sure these all come from the same place. The pot costs about $37. You could try getting a non water tight pot for about $5 and attempt to make it water tight. It is a 1K ohm, you only use about a 1/4 turn, so the fact that the new pot will have a "stopper" shouldn't matter (the existing one has no stopper, goes completely around) OMC made the sensor as water tight as they could and water still gets in there, so you mite get thru a season. You should check your wires out too, mine had some bare spots showing, so i plan to just run a wire thru the hole that the depth finder or speed sensor go thru ( a little red-neckish but chances are, the wire will never be seen when the boats in the water). The existing pot has 2 solder terminals, the new will have 3, just use an ohm meter to verify the direction matches between the pots and solder your wires on to one end post and the middle post, then solder a jumper from the unused side post to the middle post- this just insures that no sensor "floating" will occur. Water will find its way in there being that it's submerged, so i'd spend the money on the best silicone money can buy. Good Luck!
