I've learned many times over the years never to make "common sense" assumptions on 30+ year old equipment/electronics.
I'm currently installing a new trim sender and limit switch. When trying to trace the wires all four of them literally fell apart in my hands as I touched them. I can't believe how badly weathered they were.
The manual explains One trim switch (port) wire goes to ground and one goes to either an unmarked or brown/white wire and that the trim sender (starboard) goes to a purple and blue wire near the trim pump.
At the trim pump I have:
1 x single purple wire w/bullet connector
1 x single white/pink wire w/reversed bullet connector
1 x double baby blue set of wires w/bullet connector
At the engine I have:
1 x black wire to ground w/ring terminal
Can someone confirm these assumptions since the manual doesn't?
Assumption 1: The white/pink wire takes the place of the brown/white wire.
Assumption 2: The trim sender is a simple potentiometer or rheostat and that it doesn't matter which wire goes to blue and which wire goes to purple.
Assumption 3: The trim switch is a simple contact switch and it doesn't matter which wire goes to white/pink and which one goes to ground.
Also, do there exist good wiring diagrams for mercruisers? Wiring diagrams make working on electronics 10 times more fun.
