hi guys i have a 1993 60hp merc with power trim. i cant seem to be able to find what trim sender kit i need for this engine. i have a kit part no 821400a2 but for this kit there should be a slot in the pin that holds the trim ram and 2 pre drilled and tapped holes for the sender to attach to. and i dont have any of these items.please help as i want to fit the trim sender, i have the guage, and the wiring is already on the loom tan with blue stripe,so with sender fitted ill be ok.everyone i ask seems to think this is right sender kit but it definatly dont fit mine without a lot of hassle.the stainless pin that holds the single ram has no pin running through centre but has pin on the side that holds in the staionary position.my engine serial no is 09707726 the tag says belgium if that helps at all. any info would be gratefull thanks in advance phill

Re: trim send for 60hp merc

That's the right sender for 1993 and up 60 Mercs. But before 1993 they weren't available. Here's the catch. Merc isn't terribly glued to model years like real outboards. Yours could be a 1993 with a 1992 midsection. They don't update their parts by model year. They update when they run out of parts. So that change could've taken place in 1992, 1993, or 1994. If there isn't a place to mount the trim sender on the swivel bracket at the top pin of the trim ram, you're out of luck.

 that would explain my problem. could i drill out the trim shaft to accept a centre pin and grind a groove in the side of it then drill and tap holes for the sender to fit or does the later trim pin run in a bush ? i know this is getting in a bit deep but i need a trim guage.and not prepared to let it beat me (i hope not anyway) :)

The older style pin isn't retained the same. It can move wheras the newer one is pinned so that it can't move. I believe the older pin is also smaller in diameter which would make modification difficult to impossible. But never say never.

Re: trim send for 60hp merc

cheers willy b, your right about the smaller size.i noticed that straight away, if i do drill the ram to allow it to look like later ram what type of drill bit should i use this being stainless steel. and is there a diagram anywhere that would show me where exactly the side screws need to be and where the groove in the pin needs to be for sender to fit and work properly . if by chance you or anyone else has a diagram or good pic could you please post or send to me my email is
phillnjack@blueyonder.co.uk
and i am gonna try to do this job coz im a bit stubborn and wont let anything beat me. well almost anything that is.

Phillnjack,
I have a similar problem with my 40hp. I hope you will pursue this, and let us know how you achieved your goal. I'd be most interested.

Re: trim send for 60hp merc

ok done it, firstly left the side pin that holds the centr pin in place . then drilled a 3mm hole straight through the ram and centre pin then knocked out the centre pin. then used grinder to make slot in end of centre pin.make sure you grind it about 3 mm deep by 3mm wide.then put all back and mark screw holes. it will help if you can see an original to see how its mounted if not e-mail me and i will send you some pics mail to phillnjack@blueyonder.co.uk. i have tried this out and after a few minor adjustments its perfect so now im happy hope this helps others as much as me
