Trim Savers for I/O?

Couple weeks ago when I went to check out a boat, the guy had pieces of plastic that he would use to take some of the weight off the hydraulics.

He raised it all the way, slipped the plastic pieces over the shiny part of the hydraulics and then lowered them a little until the plastic inserts had some weight on them.

Is this common? Anyone know where to buy something similar? Is it necessary?

Re: Trim Savers for I/O?

I just asked about these myself recently. I learned they're called "trailering clips." They're sold right here on the I-boats website, and I've also found them at every marina I've been to locally since then. About $20 for a pair.

Just got mine. They take the strain off the hydraulics, and more importantly offer a backup in case of a hydraulic failure while towing that may cause your drive to drop and drag the pavement.

Thanks for the info! They are all standard, right? As in, I can order one meant for a mercruiser and it would work fine on my volvo?

Randyo, You may have to cut them down to size if they are the one size fits all. That is what I had to do for my Alpha drive. Just used a hacksaw :)

Nope...they're NOT all standard. Length is easy to adjust with a saw, but I believe OMC's, Volvos, and Mercruisers may have different shaft diameters. Best to get some that state they fit Volvo, or maybe someone on the Mercruiser/Volvo repair site can advise if their trim cylinders are the same diameter.
