Trim & RPM Guages

I just woke my boat up from her winter nap and took her for a quick ride around the lake to make sure everything works ok. Although it started up easy and performed well, I noticed two guages were not working properly.

The tilt and trim on the OB motor (F150) works perfrectly well. However the guage only reads 1/2 trim when it is fully down. I tried cycling it a few times through the trim and tilt figuring something was stuck but it doesn't want to move lower than 1/2 trim when fully down.

Similarly the RPM guage is stuck at around 5000 RPS and doesn't want to move regardless of idling or WOT.

Other guages (speed, voltage, & fuel) seem to be working fine. The guages are manufactured by Faria which came new with the boat (5 yrs old) Is there something I may be overlooking or should I be planning to purchase new guages?

Helpful advice appreciated.

most likly guage time, make sure when the key is on the tach has 12V between the ign and ground posts. if so the tach should zero itself. if it wont its another bad one.
on the trim meter, dissconect the S terminal, use a multimer and check the resistance from the S wire to the black wire from full down to full up, I cant remember the excat specs but you should see something about 25 ohms to about 300.

Re: Trim & RPM Guages

I had the opportunity to look things over a little better today and figured out the trim problem.

There is a little plastic collar mounted to the motor pivot arm. It looks like there is a stop on this collar which controls an actuator for the trim guage. The collor is broken and slides freely rather than moving the acutator. Now that I know the problem, I'm hoping to find out what this thing is called so I can aquire a new one.

I believe the tach will need replacement. I have an hour meter tapped into the tach which seems to be adding time so this is an indication the tach is indeed getting power. I just hate to have an oddball guage in the panel but know it should be replaced sooner than later.

rodbolt,

Thanks for the terminology,

Is this a Yamaha dealer item or is it part of the other motor hardware (I believe made by sea steer) If the later is true, I presume most marine dealers may be able to supply the part. I can't see it being terribly expensive but I may also be surprised since it has a marine application.
