Trim Questions

Taking the 77 Galaxy out tomorrow for the 1st time. Got it water ready as well as time would allow. But a couple questions concerning the trim set up. I bypassed the trim limiter so I can raise and lower the unit. It would not go up. On the house it looks like I have a limiter and a sender unit yet I have no trim gauge. Does this mean I can just purchase a gauge and add it? When replacing the units has anyone had any luck cutting the leads going to the old units and soldering them to the new ones? This would eliminate tearing apart the stern drive.
