My buddy has a 1998 johnson 150hp with ficht. I dont have a s/n # but hopefully you can help me to help him,

His trim pump failed last fall so when he winterized it he opened screw on side of pump to let motor hang straight down.
We thought he could just manually lift the motor and prop it up to replace the trim pump. No go on that, 3 people couldnt lift it.
He cant trailer it this way to get to a mechanic without doing damage to the motor.
Is there a way to get this to go up ? What should we do?

Re: trim pump trouble

Have you tried to clean the connections of the blue and green wires that are just below the t/t unit relay box? Do the relays "click" when the t/t switch is pushed? If you use the green and blue wires disconnected and and connect them directly to a battery + to one wire and - to the other wire will motor run? I have never had to manually raise my 150 up so I don't know what I would try. I assume that manual release screw is still loosened.

"Assuming" that the release valve is still open I guess I'd just hook a tow strap to my truck and the motor leg and see if I could gently back up and start it to raise up. This could go from one failure to another in one big hurry.

Re: trim pump trouble

yes screw is open. he had a rope tied around bottom and was assisted by four others to pull on rope to free it up. said it barely budged!
top of trim pump was rusted through , it would run but would not move, that's when he decided to loosen screw to lower motor for the winter. he was thinkin to hook the tow strap up to it too but , I told him to wait to see if you guys had a solution first. didnt want to see him pull his transom out. that would suck!

Re: trim pump trouble

Quad,
I lifted my '98 J150(non ficht) by using a hydraulic jack and blocks(wood) working it up a few inches at a time and reblocking, I also slid a 2x3 or 4 through the bracket as an extra saftey measure. In order to get it started I had to lower the tongue jack all the way down which in turn raised the motor enough to get a start on the blocking.
Don't forget to chock the wheels.

Go easy, don't put so much stress on it that you break the skeg! Good luck.

Quad,
Just to let you know I used a small floor jack with wheels and kept a block of wood between the jack and LU, as close to the front as I could. Keep in mind as the motor rises the jack will need be able to move in unison. Remember, just a few inches at a time and re-block.

Re: trim pump trouble

How about removing the pin at the top of the tilt shaft, then lifting and securing to the transom saver?

Re: trim pump trouble

That trim unit is held onto the motor by two stainless pins. If you can drive out the bottom one, you will be able to tilt the motor easily to remove the upper pin. You will want to do this to replace the PTT motor anyway.

Re: trim pump trouble

Removing the bottom pin is the best idea yet. That way you'll have access to the top pin if needed.

cant remember if the pins are accessable in current position but it sounds like that might work. will check it out.

The bottom one should be. Done it before.

Re: trim pump trouble

Quad,
boobie is correct, the bottom is is accessible at all times. However, with the motor all the way down there is a lot of pressure and may not come out very easily. Also note that the top pin/rod will not become accessible until the motor is lifted to at least trailer bracket height.
Be careful when removing and/or replacing the pins/rods not to mushroom the ends by excessive force.
