I have a 3.0 liter Alpha one stern on my Reinell brx. I was about to go fishing when my trim failed. It went up but wouldn't go down.Then shortly after that neither worked. I think it is an electrical problem of some sort. Is there an order of sequence in how to trace the problem. I'm not sure where the solinoid is or which wires I should be checking. Any help on this would be much apprieciated. Thanks

Hello Surveyor1951 and welcome to iBoats.

Firstly can I point you the direction of this -> http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=220416

and once we know that information, I can direct you to a service manual and refer to a page to get you pointed in the right direction.

Re: Trim problem-electrical?

Below are my Serial Numbers for my boat. The boat is a 1996 Renell 170 BRXL. I hope this is what your looking for:
Engine=Mercury SN=0f758732 3.0L LX Alpha One
Mercruiser-SN=0f651546
Transom SN=0f651546
Date SN=0P716399
When I hit the switch up or down I hear no noise, the trim will not go up or down. The trailer switch works, it goes up. Also I lost the nut off the top of my carburator cover, do you know the size of it is? Thanks for your help.

Thanks Supreme Mariner & Don S. My problem was with the plug connector at the solinoid to the switch where the 20 amp fuse was. I also bought a manual for this engine through Iboat. I solved the problem in 20min thanks to troubleshooting info Don S attached. Very much apprieciated & thanks once again.
