Trim Not Working

Hi All,

After using my boat with no problems for weeks already this summer I went to start my 2004 Johnson 4 Stroke Outboard (70hp) yesterday and it started right up no problem but I had no trim at all. (it was suggested I post here as Suzuki makes the trim for these motors?)

The battery has plenty of juice because the engine will crank and it starts flawlessly.

I tried the trim on both the throttle control and on the engine itself (there is a button that allows the user to do this) and nothing happened. There was no clicking or anything when the trim buttons were pushed.

I was able to let down manually after turning the release screw on the port side of lower unit. There was also ATF fluid in the tilt motor. My motor manual says that there are two fuses on the cowling, one of which is a 30 amp and is related to the trim electrical. I checked that fuse, it seemed fine, but I replaced it with a new fuse regardless and still the trim didn't work. I could not find the other 15 amp fuse under the cowling as per the engine manual despite almost 10minutes of looking!

Some specifics on the motor itself:
Model #: J70PLS0
Serial #: S 16027682

I'm at a loss -- I'm hoping that its not the trim motor itself because it looks to be about a $300-$500 part and I can't understand why one day it would work fine and the next day it would just "stop"?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks,
RJJ

Re: Trim Not Working

You need to do some trouble shooting. Take a volt meter and see if there is getting power to the trim motor when the trim button is pushed. If you have power there then I think you have a bad motor or a bad connection. If there is no power at the motor then just start working your way back to the switch. See if there is power to the switch. and just work your way from there. Hope this helps.

Re: Trim Not Working

Hi

Checked the boat again last night - I can hear the relays clicking when I push the trim buttons up and down so I have ruled out that the leads are not good - is that right?

Also, a potentially more worrying issue is that next to the relays under the plastic cover for the electrical panel I found 4 wires that had the insulation burned off of them and there was some corrosion as seen in the attached pictures.

This is in addition to the trim motor not working. Can anyone review the attached pictures and let me know their thoughts?

Any help is much appreciated!!
