trim motor on '84 OMC

I have an '84 SeaRay with 3.8 and OMC - I think it's the 800 stinger? My understanding is the trim motor on this is also the same motor that does the "trailer up" tilt? Here's what my problem is - I can't get the motor to "trim down"...it appears to be all the way up - both solenoids for trim are working - you can hear and feel them...so power at trim switch is good to solenoids...but it will not tilt the whole motor from front to back bringing lower unit closer to parallel with transom...it just "whirrs". My seloc manual says the whole trim pump and motor is a sealed unit - nothing has to be done...I see no leaks at trim pump, but I'm wondering how to check fluid level, or is there something else I'm missing? I'm plowing more lake then I'd like to be plowing out there....

Thanks in advance.

P.S....just to be sure, I did change out both those solenoids....didn't make any difference.

Your understanding is incorrect. The "trailer up" tilt is done by the small motor low on the port side of the intermediate housing. If your setup has "trim", it would have been an optional system on the front engine mounts that raise and lower the whole engine and outdrive as one unit.

If you do not have that system and try to trim by using the tilt motor, you are in for serious problems, the very least of which would be the premature wear of the drive ball gears and then the subsequent disasterous side load and case wear on the upper gear housing and ball gear shaft bearings.

btw, the tilt motor uses two solenoids; one for up, one for down.

Thank you for your reply - I understand what you are saying - I'm just going by the Selco manual or whatever it's called. I don't use "trailer up" function as trim while boating.

On the starboard side right in front of the transom, there's a pump (it's not up front as you suggest) - I can see the lines going to the hydraulic risers that raise the entire motor and sterndrive up and down as you say. Because the trim motor is running, I wondered if my fluid level in reservoir below the trim motor is low - but I can't figure out which plug is which - I'm looking straight down and can't really tell whether one plug (aft) is higher then another plug (starboard) - and whether to fill it up or not...I did remove one plug (starboard) - nothing ran out - should I fill that up with 10w-30?

I ran the boat for two hours tonite testing a jb weld repair to lower unit (it held!!), but trim is still not working although power all the way back to trim motor. And yes, two solenoids for trim, and two more for "trailer up" function. All are brand new.

You originally aske if the "trailer up' tilt and the trim were the same. My answer was NO. Now you are saying that your have the optional trim system. Which is it?

Also I did not say that the tilt motor was forward. I, in fact, did not say exactly where it was beyond on the port side of the intermediate housing. That would be to the rear, up against the transom.
