Trim motor issues motor runs than stops

The boat is a 74 so I think I have the prestolite motor. Whats going on is the motor will run for a little bit than it stops. If the drive is all the way down and i start to go up the motor will run till the drive is about 3/4 of the way up than quits. I stop for a little and it will run again for a little bit, it does this both up and down. I took the motor apart and cleaned it and thought the bi-metal switch didnt look very good. could this be my problem?? How long should i be able to run the trim motor without that particular thermal protector shutting it off? Thanks!

What switch do you have? You might need to hit two switches at once.

its not a problem with the switch. it does this even if i run the motor directly with a jumper wire.
