When i trim down the motor it goes beyond vertical. The trim rod is in #1 position. I am pretty sure I want it in #4 position or possibly #5. How do you get that ring off of either side to reposition the rod?

Need yr and model#. If you have power trim leave it because you use the trim to adjust it. You actually want the motor beyond vertical as that will give you the best holeshot. When the boat is up on top of the water you adjust it for best top speed. You can run the motor against the trim rams they are designed for that.

Not too worried about a hole shot on a pontoon boat.

The info on the motor is in my signature. Do you know how to remove the ring off the rod?

Need a pic unless your trim unit is broken set it where you want it and forget it. Your trim unit is designed for that purpose the ring should come off like a keychain ring.

It is a spiral. It should come off with your fingers and determination. Getting it back on is a lot of fun, but also can be done with your fingers (and patience). My motor bypasses that rod when in extreme down position. My manual says the rod is only for centering the trim indicator. It serves no purpose I can tell.

Your trim rod is held in place by a circlip. One on each end. You will need a special circlip tool, similar to a pliers with a point on each jaw. Insert the points in the two holes on the circlip and expand it till the circlip is able to be removed (it comes out of the groove in the end of the rod.)

Thanks emdsapmgr. That is the answer I was looking for. Trying to take it off with my fingers would be an endeavor doomed for failure!
