First off hello ive got a real quick question ive got a 79 85hp evinrude that i cant get to trim up. If i push down on the trim control it works fine ,but if i try to bring it back up nothing happens. A friend suggested replacing the relay does that sound like the best place to start replacing stuff ,or should i try something else. Also if anyone has a wiring diagram that would be a huge help also

Thanks

swap the relays. then if it goes up you know you have one bad relay.

You don't have relays on the 1979 motor; you have a single solenoid used only for raising the motor.

Check the solenoid wiring.

This diagram does not show the gauge wiring; let me know [PM] if you need it.

off topic but i also have i believe its a 96 force 40hp that keeps blowing out (exhaust seal gasket?) ill take it to the shop get it fixed it'll run one trip without any problems, but the next time i take it out ill end up having to limb home with the cowling off the motor because the exhuast fumes build up inside the cowling and rob the engine of air. This has happened to me 5 times now and it always the same thing

The PT&T solenoid for the 1979 V4 motors was not on the motor; it was in a black box mounted near the motor. The black box is denoted by the rectangular shape on the wiring diagram.

BTW, I was not suggesting that you check the solenoid when I said to check the wiring.

The diagram is directly from the 1979 factory manual for your engine. If you have anything else, it is not stock and you will have to post some pictures. The 1979 trim motor has three wires, not two.

Ezeke is correct. On my 79 models, the factory glued a wiring diagram to the inside of the remote trim box cover. There is a separate fuse in the box for the trim. Make sure all connections at the box are clean and tight. The trim switch at the control box should have a plug-in connection hanging just below the control box. You should be able to disconnect the trim switch there and test the ends of the pigtail that run to the box.

Re: trim issues on a 1979 85hp evinrude

same thing happened to me last week. trim worked fine going down but when I tried to go up, no sound or anything. no clicking solonoids either. Removed the switch out of the gas lever at the remote. Cut the wires goint to the old switch and jumped the blue and green wires to the hot and it worked like a charm. I think blue wire is up and green wire is down. My switch was original to a 1988 boat so it was time for it to go out... My point::::: try the switch.

Yes, that is the trim box. The small bulge in the red wire is the fuse. If the trim goes down OK, the fuse is probably OK. The solenoid is wired to control the "up" only-as that is the movement where all the current draw is. It should click when you depress the switch up. If it doesn't probably a bad solenoid.

Looks like original wiring needs a little cleaning too.

If the PT&T works in either direction the fuse is not blown.
