I have a 1988 Evinrude 90hp that I think the trim motor is bad in... I just bought the boat and the switch is good, both relays click when you push the up and down swith but not sound at all from motor.

Are there other tests to make sure it is the motor and also, do you have to remove the engine from the boat in order to remove the trim motor...

Thanks Guys,
Pastor Phil

Re: Trim Issue

You can try putting 12v directly to the wires going into the motor, that will help diagnose if the motor is bad. It will bypass the relays.

To replace motor if needed, you have to brace the engine and take out the bolts holding the tilt n trim unit in place as well as the pin that holds the tilt ram to the engine. Not too bad, you don't have to remove the motor from the transom.

and when i say put 12v to the wires, attach negative to ground, and positive to the green or blue wire.

Re: Trim Issue

Thanks blimp, I hooked up power to the wires directly and there was not any action from the motor...

So, by removing 6 bolts, i took off the ptt unit and bout a new motor for $145, filled it with fluid put it back together and it works like a champ...

Thanks for the help, I'm not sure how much money I just saved myself but I am sure a fair amount....
