Trim hydraulic dripping

Hello everyone, I have an old bass boat with hydraulic trim on it. The trim still functions, ie it lifts the motor up and down. But the left hydraulic drips when the motor is trimmed in the up position and there are no rebuild kits available as this system is VERY old lol. When the motor is trimmed down it doesn’t leak, but when trimmed up it drips about every ten seconds the right hydraulic doesn’t leak at all. Do you think it would last long enough if I topped the system off before I go out to the lake or am I screwed lol?

It will continue to leak. Most all cylinders can be rebuilt or replaced one way or another. Might be done at a hydraulic shop

you can get rebuild kits for the pumps and cylinders for all the TOP systems over the years.

hydraulic leaks always get worse. and usually fail quickly. Seals only last so long before the rubber breaks down.

I couldn’t find one for a 1974 Merc 1500

If you google the part number you might find something.
If the number is 48664A 1 there are some on ebay.
The part number is 64507A 1. And I find all sorts of websites offering it but they all say not available lol.

That particular system has a wiper and Oring sealing the trim rod. See if you can find a picture of it's innards. It will have sizes of the orings, which you can use to match it up.

You can replace just the oring that is leaking fairly simply. Remove the trim cylinder from the engine. use a spanner to loosen the trim cylinder end cap.

Very Important-----The trim cylinder body has a steel cylinder that contains the piston. You must be sure to pull the trim rod, steel cylinder and piston out of the aluminum trim cylinder body, as a unit. You do not want to pull the piston out of the steel cylinder, or you need a special tool to reinstall it, an the piston teflon seal could be damaged, and your PTT unit will be much worse off..

Once you have the trim rod, steel cylinder and piston out, as an assembly, simply unbolt the trim rod from the piston, pull the end cap off the trim rod, replace the oring and reassemble.
