Have A 2003 50HP Merc.I installed a trim gauge@ the dash. Their was a factory wire for a gauge @ the dash& a jumper wire (w/male end) @ the wire harness connection@ the motor. Their are no female connections for the jumper wire.Do I need to install A "sending unit"? Their are no in used screw holes @ the motor where one would be installed. Do I need A " sending unit"? Can this be done & how would I do this?

Well first of all welcome to iboats. Great to have you aboard... :welcome:

In order to have a trim gauge at the helm, yes there has to be some type of sending unit or trim sensor to send the position to that gauge. So unless this engine has such a sender all ready installed, you will have to find one for your setup. I am not familiar with trim sensors myself, having no reason for one, so I'll let others chime in with better suggestions for your problem. I have had tilt and trim setup engines, but never thought I needed such a trim gauge myself... But again welcome aboard and others will be here shortly...

Just had a trim gauge installed on my 2014 90 Yamaha powered Xpress, let my dealer do it, charged $50 bucks labor. Mine had the sending unit, only needed gauge and wiring 90 bucks OTD. Had a 2003 Yamaha that came with sending unit, your Merc should have one. Trim your motor all the way down, should be able to see sending unit, should be attached to steering rod housing. Black with plastic tab that rotates when motor trimmed. Good luck, this is something I was willing to pay my dealer for, hope this helps.

Yes -- you need a trim sender. The sender tells the gauge what position the engine is in so the gauge can display that position. It's is probably available right here on iBoats.

90 merc trim all the way up and should be mounted right in the middle of the the motor mount. I have one and a gauge that has always worked but put a new trim motor in and when I pulled the side cover to check the relays a brown/white wire that goes to the sending unit dropped down have no idea were it goes. Gauge has brown/white and now does not work. Harness from the helm has it going to a brown wire. ?? Go figure Good luck.
