can the trim gauge works without the engine started or does the engine have to be runing and is there a way to check if the sending unit (brown/white) wire is working i have a 3.0 - omc Cobra stern drive <br /><br />thanks jim :confused:

Yes it can, the trim sending unit is basicaly a taper wound potentiometer or variable resistor. One lead is grounded and the other lead is connected to the trim guage. The trim guage is powered via the ignition or accessory or ???. You can check the sending unit if you have an Ohm meter. Just measure the resistance between the two leads as you trim the motor up/down, the resistance will increase and decrease.<br /><br />JK
