Trim gauge repair?

I have a 92' Stratos fishing boat. I have never really owned a boat like this until lately. I have started to fix all the little things that are wrong with it. The trim gauge does not work. Being a new boater this gauge is useful to me. I used another boat with one and it made a great deal of difference. My question is what all could be wrong with it? I have checked the wires, it is getting power I know. What else should I check?

Thanks

See if resistance across the sender changes with swing of the motor. Check if power to the gage changes with swing of the motor. If all checks out, it's probably the guage itself.
Being this is not an evinrude question, you may get bumped to another forum (general outboard?)
Welcome aboard and good luck.

jayca, check that you have both battery positve AND negative going to he gauge. Then connect the ground post to the S or Sender post if the gauge pins, the problem is the sending unit on the motor,or the wires going from it to the gauge.
DHP

DHP I checked the gauge and it is fine. It pegged out just like it should. It is getting power also. It must be the sending unit. Is there anyway to check to see if the sending unit is bad?

Thanks
JC

Re: Trim gauge repair?

Hey Jayca: I tend to make this my standard response to trim and other gauge issues. Rather than talk you through testing the sender (really easy with a multimeter), go to the Teleflex gauge website. I believe they have a troubleshooting guide for trim gauges and senders. At any rate, they do have resistance (ohms) specs for "full up" and "full down" for trim senders for major manufacturers. Basically, all you do is use your ohm meter to check to see if the sender is putting out the proper resistence at full up and full down. If your gauge and sender are both OK, then it's probably the wires or connections.

Good luck.
