Trim gauge all or nothing

My trim gauge will register all or nothing. Full up or full down, but nothing in between. I followed the suggestions in some earlier posts to clean the contacts in the sending unit on a Mercruiser Alpha drive. I found that the sending unit has a considerable amount of grease/lubricant in it. Is this normal? If so, is there any special type grease to use after the contacts are cleaned? The grease has a green cast to it, so I suspect water has gotten into the unit. Thanks

yes grease is normal
yes green colour suggests copper corrosion

you may be able to clean up the coper contacts enough to restore full function of the sender unit - worth trying

replacement includes all the wireing back into the boat I believe.....

good luck with the cleaning route!

I had the exact same problem with mine. While the boat was in for service I had the mechanic replace the sender and all is well. I don't think it is a real hard thing to replace, the hard part is buying just the trim sender itself. It normally comes packaged with the tilt limit sender also which makes it expensive.

Jeff

PS, you may also have a trim limit siwtch in place of your tilt sender
