trim gauge adjustment

Im a newbe here in this forum but I've read and browsed the posts for weeks and felt pretty comfortable tackling the trim switch repair. All has gone very well but after installation, I find the trim sender only allows about half the sweep of the scale on the gauge. Ive got a 89 SeaRay 23 with 5.7L and Alpha One, Gen 1 outdrive. The switches ordered were SEI for the Alpha One, Gen 1. Any one else have similar issues? The trim limit works fine and I have full control of the outdrive, Just seems strange I only use half of the available gauge sweep. Thanks in advance for any feedback you might have.

Half down or half up? Are you at the max or min of the adjustment range? If you are you might try taking the sender off and moving it one notch in the hing pin, to see if that increases your range.

Re: trim gauge adjustment

Hi Terry,
The sender is working fine. I have it set to full down at the 1/4 level (as in a fuel gauge) and full trim up at the 3/4 mark on the gauge. Trim gauge sweeps thru four quadrants. I was hoping there was a way of changing the operating scale range to take advantage of the full sweep range of the gauge. It works as is but seems odd that it uses only half of the gauge sweep.

Do mercruiser trim switches have a different resistance range than the SEI counterpart?

You wouldn't think so, would be pretty dumb:rolleyes:. It sure does look to be a resistance range problem though. Maybe you could call SEI and find out the specs (min max ohms) and them measure yours, and if it is not correct have them send you a new one. If you have the old one you could try measuring that for a comparison. You could just live with it, but you would be PO'd every time you looked at the gauge:D Good luck.
