Trim down Ok but Trim Up is VERY SLOW

Has the trim pump with the white tank and yellow cap.

First thing I did was top off the trim oil. So after about 1.5 to 2 minutes the trim will finally make it to the top. Both the trim up and trailer functions seem to be working properly. After trimming all the way back down I noticed white stuff mixing into the oil. So I removed the two trim lines nearest the boat from the trim cylinders. I proceeded to add Oil and trim up in an attempt to pump out what I was assuming was contaminated oil from the resevoir. The oil pumped out very slowly which leads me to believe there may be a problem with the trim pump.
after flushing and refilling this whitish stuff keeps appearing so im assuming it must be air bubbles.

So would this most likely be a trim pump issue or could this be caused by the trim cylinders? (cylinders seem to have no leaks and will hold the trim in the up position)
Any help is greatly appreciated
thanks,
Chris

Ayuh,... I've never had 1 of those pumps go Bad,...
But, I suppose it could be aerating the oil, instead of pumpin' it...

The trim pump starts to make some weird sounds, its not the uniform kind of buzzing sound that you would normally hear that changes only when the trim has been maxed out. This thing starts making a few different buzzing sounds.

Is there anything inside the pump that could possible need cleaning?

Re: Trim down Ok but Trim Up is VERY SLOW

Any ideas??

I'm having the same kind of problem with 1998 50 hp Johnson. Goes down ok but does not go up very well. I seen the swrew were I need to fill and the screw were I can drain but their is another screw beside the drain screw with a spring clip and I'm not sure what that one is for.
Anybody with any help would be appreciated.

Mine is a separate pump and reservoir inside the boat. I'm just not sure what the actual problem is. Cylinders will cost about 200 and a pump about the same. I'm just trying to avoid 400$ by fixing everything.
Hopefully someone else has had a similar problem and can help

Bodidles, you need to post your problem over in the Johnson/Evinrude forum, this forum is for Mercruiser I/O's

steele33, you posted you have a 91 boat, but which outdrive do you have? Alpha I or Alpha I Gen II?
One other thing in your original post you said "I noticed white stuff mixing into the oil" was that water in the oil making it milky, or was the oil just aerated and cleared up after setting for a bit?

I am not sure if it is gen 1 or 2. I will ID it when I get home from school. The oil in the resevoir does seem to clear up after setting for awhile.

One thing I have found is the trim rams need lube.Spray WD-40 on the rams trim up and spray again and again.
The motor might need to be cleaned.Be carefull when dissasembling. There might be a ball bearing on the end of the armature shaft.
The other guys have covered the rest.
Profile?? You might be close to someone who can help.J

Here's a link to the Service manual for your engine.
http://www.4shared.com/document/dPQUcyn_/Service_Manual_14.html

Since you don't mention ny problems other than the slow up, I would guess that you may have a pressure relief valve in the pump going bad on you. If you go to section 5A of the manual (link above) it shows how to test the pump.
If there are some other issues, might want to check section 1C too.

Re: Trim down Ok but Trim Up is VERY SLOW

Don, Thanks for the manual and all of the help.

I tried to bleed the system again and noticed a few interesting things.

1 the pump makes a slurping sound as if you were trying to get the last little bit out of a cup with a straw. Wenever it does get a flow the fluid coming out of the up lines (while bleeding) is aerated.

2When Disconnecting the down line I couldnt even get the pump to push oil out of the line.

( the First two were done with the pump wired directly to the battery)

3 My three prong round connector only has 2 prongs. also there are only two wires going in and three coming out. It appears one prong may have broken off? There is also a purple line that is pulled back and wound up but doesnt seem to be connected to anything.

You might just want to remove the pump and pull the reservoir off and see if something is loose allowing the pump to suck air above the fluid level.
