Trim assembly right part??

Hello there, I have a 1996 100HP 4 cylinder motor, serial #OG316187. Merc service manul shows a yellow fill cap, mine is black. Dealer confirms this and says there's 2 different part numbers (mine should be yellow). I get the new $1200 part and it's not the same,(yellow cap)? Mine has 3 wires off of the trim motor, the new one only has 2 . My trim motor is kind of sqaurish and the new one is round. My engine has trim solenoids mounted on it and the new one has relays. Is this the right part? Do I have to remove the solenoids and put the newer relays in there place? I can't get a straight answer from them and I really don't want to mess with a $1200 part. As always help is appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

Re: Trim assembly right part??

Brian;

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - (100 H.P. (1996 ))
Serial No: 0G316187 Model No: 1100412SD

Parts Listing for model 1100412SD:

100/115/125 H.P. 80 JET (4 CYLINDER) - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See POWER TRIM (BLACK FILL PLUG)(USA:G359967/BEL:9934136 AND BEL and
POWER TRIM(YELLOW FILL PLUG)(USA:G359968/BEL:9934137 AND UP Note: should be G358868/UP

For your s/n, yours should be black as you have indicated.

I have the service manual 90-830234 and it has two sections, one for the black and one for the yellow fill cap.

A lot of times a replacement PTT will be a two wire unit, as most newer PTT units are two wire. As long as it fits properly, and the relays and wiring harness are provided, it should be a easy switch.

I thank you for your response. So I'm guessing that my manual has a typo? POWER TRIM(S/N USA-OG360002/BEL-9934136 & BELOW) Black Fill Plug. POWER TRIM(S/N USA-OG360003/BEL-9934137 & ABOVE) Yellow Fill Plug.My manual is right from Merc, back to the dealer I go! Thanks again. Brian.

Hi and thanks, I thought the same thing as in it's a newer improved model. It has the exact same dimensions and I know it would fit. I just didn't want to mess anything up! The dealer wants me to bring it back to make sure, Brian.

Re: Trim assembly right part??

don't let the dealer make your life complicated. there are only two systems that fit 1996 100HP and they are interchangeable.

In early 1990's oildyne designed a hydraulic pump for mercury that used rocker arm actuator. It was a decent design but ultra sensitive to debris. It did not stand the test of time as well as Chrysler/Force/Prestolite inspired designs with a shuttle piston. Shuttle pumps go 18-25 years while rocker pumps start having troubles in the 12-15 range. aka- black filler plug.

In 1996 oildyne released an updated pump with shuttle type actuator and debris filter. The pump was square and did not fit inside the old motor. The pump is a clear upgrade with 18-25 year lifecycle. However, the new 2w motor was a downgrade. The 3w motor is built to last 50 years and would if the cable jacket didn't crack and let water in. The new motor only has two top bolts and due to butterfly effect water usually gets in around 12-14 years. aka - yellow filler plug

the systems are interchangeable. the 3w system uses solenoids and the 2w system uses relays. There are no changes in switch or mounting brackets. You just take out solenoid wiring at starter and put back relay wiring. Relay wiring is generally better since it includes a hi-amp circuit breaker between battery leads and trim system. If you get a motor or switch short, the breaker should pop before there are any fires or damages. the only thing that can't be mixed is trying to put an older round reservoir on top of a square pump. it won't fit.

Well, thank you. I haven't been on here for awhile and yes you just confirmed what I had originally thought. It seems no one at the dealer knew what they were talking about. They finally confirmed what you said above. Stupid thing is that I paid them to put it on, and after looking at it, I would have been able to do it myself. Oh well live and learn, at least now I can use my boat!
