Trim and tilt...

Reading through threads here..Im having problems with my trim and tilt. Sat all winter, went to check it other day and would not move. Motor makes noise, relays click (already swapped them) took trim all the way off. Oiled cylinders and refilled trim fluid. Put back on and still the same. GGRRRRR... So thought I would run it without my trim on the boat but it has no way to lock down. I have had boats that did not have tilt/trim but there was a lock to hold it from "flopping in the wind". I have a 88 Vision f/s with a Johnson GT 150 VRO. Model
J150STLESB Any suggestions??

You'd be better off just repairing what you have. All it may need is a rebuilt t/t mtr.

motor makes noise or motor makes noise like its trying to trim. If its a 2 wire make a jumper and plug it directly into the motor then touch the battery. blue to positive green to negative and it should trim up. (on a 3 wire then blue to positive and black to negative)

Well motor makes noise like normal, but motor does not move. Really no sound difference between up or down. Are they a DIY rebuildable?

Re: Trim and tilt...

It could also be a broken coupler below the t/t mtr that runs the oil pump. Seen it happen.

another thing to try is open the manual release, lift motor, close MRV, let go of motor. If motor stays up then you're probably looking at a problem with the ball valves in pump (or a broken driveshaft as mentioned above)

Re: Trim and tilt...

you aren't looking for it to function. your previous posts indicate a functional trim motor. Therefore the problem is either
1) motor not coupled to pump
2) engine swivel mechanically jammed
3) pump valves malfunctioning
4) push/pull cylinders malfunctioning

It would seem safe to assume that you have already inspected your outboard and eliminated items 1 and 2. if not then should do so before moving on to hydraulics. If so, then you are lifting engine and letting go in order to isolate 3 from 4.

RRitt..You explain well.. I believe it is in the hydrolics, which if overly complicated will probelly have someone else fix. If a shadetree like myself can tackle it I will shurly give it a shot! Do you of any literature/ part suppliers for rebuilds?

hydraulics don't work if you cut corners, try to substitute similar parts, or love to use duct tape on things. If you are clean and meticulous then hydraulics aren't too bad. The hard part is finding good instructions and all the parts needed.

The OEM Factory Service Manual has some good instructions on repair.
