trim and tilt

I have a 1988 OMC 5.7 litre engine and when ever I press the trim and tilt button on the throtle the volt meter drops and the engine stalls. Anybody got an idea?

you probably have a shorted trim motor.....
its eating up all the current and the ignition coil doesn't have enough voltage to fire.

Can the electric motor be easily separated from the pump and replaced.

Is the wiring original? Someone may have taken +12v from the purple ignition wire to feed the trim pump. That will cause the effect you describe.

The solenoids should be supplied directly from the +12v starter stud, through a fuse or breaker.

Thanks Wire 2, I did have a purple wire in the wrong place and it works great now. Jim
