I have a 40 hp -92 Evinrude I bought three years ago. This summer I had a problem with tilt/trim and starter, too. The tilt/trim was slow moving and later the motor did not respond (did not run) to the control at all. The referring solenoid gave a "click" when up/down button was pressed though. I opened the trim/tilt motor and found it dirty (some dust from the brushes). I cleaned and lubricated it and it started to run like new when testing it in my lab. When I mounted the electric engine back to its place at the trim/tilt system, I found it hard to make it spin by hands. After some using of the force, the electric engine was suspiciously easy spinning. The tilt/trim motor was now running very healthy, but there was no movement on the hydraulic piston. The engine is now tilted up, so basically I can not get it down. Did I broke something, like the axel connecting the hydraulic part and the electric engine? Or could the problem just be caused by the low level of hydraulic fluid?

The other part of my story concerns the starter. When trying to start the motor, the start engine runs very slow having periodic change in the revolutions per second between 1-0,2!! So it sounds quite ill. I tried to spin the engine by hands (from the emergency start flywheel) making it revolve quite easily few rounds facing healthy resistance every time the pistons were having compression face as it should do. Then I took the start motor out (dismount?) and tested it in a bench by giving direct lead (with cables dedicated for this purpose) from the battery (the same start battery that is mounted in my boat). The start engine started to run perfectly with high speed. I also tested that it performes a sufficient torque by pressing the running motor axel against a hard wood that broke into pieces fast as I pressed. So there is no problem with my start engine I presume. Then I chechked the connections in the battery, the emergency switch (bypassed), the connections in the engine (bright and tight). Everything seemes to be OK.

Anyone having experience/expertice on these issues? I would appreciate good advice.

Markku
