I have a 1988 50 hp outboard that I'm trying to do a waterpump job on. The Clymer manual says to loosen the locknut on the linkage them turn the big " adjuster nut " until the two seperate. I've tried going both ways but it doesn't work. I reach a point where it seems like the linkage is binding on the top shaft as that side od the bolt gets longer. If I go the other way, the top bolt bottoms out but it still won't serperate. What gives?

Yeah, I had it in forward like the manual says, but it still didn't work.
