tri or single hook?

Out tiring to get through a cold winter day. I ended up in a Bass pro shop looking to bolster my tackle box. It is one of the larger chains. They had about 30 rows of fishing stuff. Spin lures work the best for what I fish for (perch, rock, spot, sunnys) in the rivers that run into the Chesapeake bay. They had about 3000 spin lures in the size I use but one thing I did notice was they all had a tri hook on them. On the few that I have bought or inherited over the years all before I converted them to a single hook had tri hooks also. I tend to release most of what I catch (salmon and sand shark my favorite eating fish don't run here to often). I found the tri hook is a real pain (I am sure the fish feels the same) to get out with out tearing up the fishes mouth. With the single hook, the hooks out, fish back in the water and I have already cast again before I would have gotten out my needle nose pliers. For all the catch and release fishermen. Do you use the tri hook? Am I missing hook ups by using a single hook? What do the pro's use?
P.S. Anyone that lives in Baltimore, Annapolis area of the bay have any hints (bait, lures or tactics, what you fish around i.e.;piers,grass areas, beaches, channels) for fishing the tributaries

I use mostly singles with flattened barbs-for catch and release.

I only use a treble when I am keeping them. The only drawback I see with a single is they will shake them more often.

DC

For fish that attack or "strike" at a lure, you will hook more with a treble hook. But if you are releasing your catch, a single hook is probably the right thing to use.

Try the treble hook but flatten the barbs on them. They will come out easier that way, and you won't miss as many hook-ups.

I use the trebble with them because that is what I can get. I have flattened the barbs which does make it easier to get the hook out. If you could get them with a single hook it would be better for catch and release but you would miss fish.

If a lure comes with a treble hook, instead of changing the hook, just take a good wire cutters, you know, like the one in your first aid kit for getting hooks out of your hand, and cut off two of the hooks. You can always put on a new single hook at a later date.

I also fish a single hook. I would rather lose
two GOOD fish than injure one that I am throwing
back. TOM :)

Anyone ever tried circle hooks as a replacement? I typically switch out the treble hooks, especially when I want to keep the fish! Takes too long to get the trebles out, when i should be fishing. I have yet to prove the point but read recently that a barbless hook will not lose many more fish than a barbed one. But is a heck of a lot easier to get out of the fish or my hand.

Arnold
In ocean water of California mouching for salmon must use circle hooks. Work very well and only fish we have ever lost is when have doubles and working one fish fast and the other slow. Lost one slow fish so far. Also once have a salmon on board must circle hooks even for bottom fish. They work better than you might think and very easy to get out.
