There are lots of maps I use... Like Yahoo maps.

You can create a 'To and From' destination and they are printable. Some even have different routes for sight-seeing etc...

Look around... there are lots of map web-sites.

H.

You could easily spend a week or more just in SF. A trip over the bridge and into Sausalito is always a treat if you have the time.

And I also agree with Pointer re the brew pubs. I also try to avoid the chain restaurants as well if possible. You can usually either get advice from a local, or you can get a pretty good idea about a restaurant from how busy they seem to be, and who the clientele seem to be...

Andrew Leigh,
If you will send me your address I will mail you some maps that I get from the Autoclub. If all works well, they will be in your hands before your plane takes off.
The on line maps, in my experience are less than satisfactory. Even if you are familiar with the highway system often times the purposed travel routes that are screwy. eg I tried to map the route to the gold country in Norther CA. The program sent me south first. Also, we have this little anomoly in the freeway system ie the sign says Northbound 101 but you are headed due west. thecompany at inbox.net.

Once you are in SF, the Golden Gate bridge won't be far out of your way, just allow an extra couple hours. Stop at Golden Gate National Park on the other side, take in the view, snap some photos, time well spent IMO.

Andrew, the only thing I would add to this is to be yourself. In most instances the American people really do like to help travelers from other countries experience their beautiful and wonderful country. So bring a lot of South African flavor with you (people will love your accent and the SA charm) and be ready to ask a lot of questions. When you show interest in America, Americans will reciprocate with more info and help than you ever wanted or imagined would be available.

So, best advice, don't try to be a local while here, but ask questions letting people know you want to experience the "local" life. You will get pointed to the local points of interest and the best places to eat. People will probably go out of their way to even lead you to where you want to be.

Enjoy your trip. If you were coming to the North East I would volunteer to be your personal guide.
