I have a 350mpi inboard Merc. my tranny cooler just went, is it important to have the cooler on there, does the tranny oil get that hot?
2nd question: what can i do about the salt water that got into the tranny?

Just what kind of 'tranny' are you referring to? An inboard gearbox, an outdrive?

Re: Trany cooling question

Obviously the first thing is to determine how the water got in there and fix that. Most gearbox pulls are pretty straightforward - unbolt everything, pull your shaft back and out it should come. Drain your oil and flush with a bunch of mineral spirits, varsol or the like. Blow it out good with clean compressed air and you should be good to go. Refill. Hopefully someone will come along with a better or easier way but as far as I know there's not much else you can do to it. Sorry I don't have a better answer for ya'. In reference to the cooler let's just say that the manufacturer of the boat knows a lot more than either one of us about their product. If it's there, it's there for a reason. I'd replace it - but again - that's just me.
