Hey fellow Starcrafter's, is there a need of adhesive when installing the transom, other than sealing the bolt's?...If so, what's your recommended adhesive and the area's to apply{transom inside skin, edges, bottom support, cap}?

Thanks for the help...I'm sure it's been asked and replied to a million times, but I can't find the answer in a nutshell.

Hey,

So here is what i did, feel free to check my resto.. But i sealed the wood in multiple coats of epoxy. The epoxy is applied between each layer of plywood. (i used multiple deck screws to hold and tighten the sheets to each other) Then more epoxy to each side and to all the edges.

Then for any hole i used 3m 5200 to seal those.

From previous posts that describe how difficult it is to get transoms out I would NOT glue it in. Seal the bolt holes but that is it.

Thanks Tim, got that part done already and onto the installing today or tomorrow.

Thanks Bananaboater, I was thinking the same thing, just needed that reassurance ;)

Oh Yeah don't use any adhesive to the boat itself. drop it in drill fasten and done!

If you need some muscle pm me. There's a couple of us in your neck of the woods that will lend a hand.

That's great Don, grab Broadcast, Mike64 and anyone else around and I'll leave the garage open and a 12'r in a cooler on the bench....be back in a day or two :D

Seriously, I appreciate all of you for the offers, But I'm a bullheaded sob and usually don't ask for physical help until I've exhausted all other avenues...blame my Dad & Grandpa, they taught me....besides that, if ya'll drink like I do...it would be cheaper to just buy a new boat{lol}...maybe we should work up a Michigan 'get together' later this summer when everyone is caught up...be nice to thank each one of ya's for the support{goe's to all here at iboats}...you folks rock!

Re: Transom time -adhesive question

If your transom was anything like mine, mine went bad because water leaked in from the top. I sealed the you know what out of mine at the top with vulkum caulking (great stuff) takes 3-4 days to dry but adheres to alot of stuff. I used a tube of caulking along the top of my transmon so no water will leak into it again. I also drilled a couple of drain holes along the bottom channel to let any water drain out that may get trapped into the channel.
I also sealed all the edges with some more vulku caulking smearing it around the edges of the trasmon with my finger.
I let the caulking dry that I apply around the transom so I did not glue it in place.

Hey ElkHunter, great minds think alike lol...I did the drain holes thing as well. and the 5200 i wiped up as I went along was spread{via fingers:D ] across the top of the transom wood...sealed all the splash-well joints with the tubes leftover as once it's opened it's done...we should be golden!
