Transom Thickness

I am rebuilding an old Glasspar G3.I have 4 sheets of Okume plywood in the transom now and with the original fiberglass shell and glue it's 1 1/4 inches thick.Five sheets will have me very close to 1 1/2.I was planning on putting six which would make it close to 1 7/8.Is this too thick for outboard motors that hang over the transom? What is an optimal thickness for a transom since I can make it whatever I want?

Re: Transom Thickness

it really depends on the motor you put on it, they old ones with the screw clamps, will not go over a thick transom. the newer bigger one are bolt on with just a little lip that goes over the transom.

Re: Transom Thickness

You can go to two and a quarter inches total thickness (including fiberglass) for most screwclamp motors, and whatever thickness you want for bolt-through. 2 inches is all you really need. How big a motor do you plan on putting on that G3? Also, if there is a splashwell, you can only go as thick as the splashwell will allow, or you won't be able to get it all back together properly. Good luck...
