What are ther pro's and cons of transom supports. Some say use the factory support, others say use a motor support from the trailer to the engine. Please help.

Re: transom support

Transom savers transfer shock to the trailer frame rather than the transom. However, I've seen and read where lower unit housings have been damaged by severe shock loads imposed on the housing. One must, however, know all of the circumstances before passing judgement on whether the transom saver was at fault, if it was installed improperly, or if not used at all, would transom damage have occured as the result of the shock. I use one.

Re: transom support

the few cons i can think of is that they are easy to steal and you can get a little wet when re-installing them after putting the boat back on the trailor.....but beyong that it is a cheap way to protect your transom and your motor. I use one all the time as well.

It also depends on the setup. My first boat was high enough that i could travel with the motor down and have a lot of clearance room. i didnt use one then. on my current setup the motor would surely bottom out without the motor being up, so i use one.
