Transom saver - possible damage ?

Just a curious question. If transom saver is installed, what happens if the boat moves forward on the trailer? Lets say you had to make an emergency stop and the boat shifts an inch or two forward? With the power trim holding the motor against the T/S would something break ? I know the boat shouldn't shift but what if it did ?

Shouldn't be any worse than knocking up against a log at low speed. The motor kicks up a bit and little damage is done.

An emergency stop should never cause this, if your boat is properly secured.

However, rear-ending another vehicle could very likely cause this to happen. And in that case, you have an insurance claim on your hands anyway....so your boat insurance would pay for any damage that may occur, assuming you have coverage.

Bottom line....I think the benefits of a transom saver far outweigh any risk of damage from such an occurance. Use one.

Happened to me. Don't ask me how (you can find it in Stupid Human Tricks), but the trailer liberated itself from the tow vehicle & struck pavement on its way up a driveway before coming to rest in the turf. Pushed the bow stop forward about six inches. The tilt has an emergency release valve which functioned perfectly & no damage to the motor or the boat.

Hey RodC, I had the same concern's. After a little research found this alternative to traditional transom supports. WORK'S GREAT for my aplication (Merc 225 O/B).
www.m-ywedge.com

The rubber wedge is not a true transom saver as forces are still applied to the transom. A beam style transom trailer transfers forces to the trailer.

Let's all remember something here.

If you have an OEM tilt/trim system, the engine is locked-up or down-hydraulically.

To make a transom saver work, one must run the engine down-SLIGHTLY-onto the t-saver.

I emphasize-Slightly.

Thanks for all the input. I use the t-saver all the time but was always somewhat concerned about fixing the motor to the trailer. Guess the emergency relief valve would come into play if something extreme were to happen.
