Just got a 1992 18 foot fiberglass runabout with Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha 1. I know transom savers work well for outboards and are highly recommended...what about I/O's? I measured, looks like I have about 22 inches of space between trailer roller and outdrive while I'm trimmed fully out, I've seen some roller models in Cabelas that go down to 21 inches for only about $25, but they all say they're designed for outboards, none mention I/O's. Is there something here I need to know? Any thoughts? Who out there uses them for their I/O's?

I guess I'm not as concerned about my transom as I am about an unknown hydraulic failure while I'm running down the road that causes my drive to drop & drag. Gives me the willies just thinking 'bout it! I like the idea of a backup.

Thanks!

Bought a set from West Marine for $24.00 for my I/O. Had to cut to fit. A stunning blue color to remind me they are there. They snap in and then I jog it down a bit. Haven't traveled with them yet, but they were recommended by other boaters.

They are called 'Trailering Clips'. You can buy them from any boating store, even on Iboats. Cost about $20 to $25 for the pair. It is a good investment. I bought mine on ebay and had to cut it down a bit to fit the hydrolic arm. Paineted mine red so I know to take it off when launching the boat or the stern drive will not come down. Check around and you will be able to find some that would suit your needs.

An I/O doesn't put the near the strain on a transom as a large outboard does when trailered. I don't see any need for one.

The clips sound like a good safety feature, I would go that way over a transom saver.

They take the strain off the hydraulics from what I see. Time will tell.

Hey hey!!! Trailering clips! I never even heard of such a thing, so I'm glad I asked. For an I/O, they looks much easier to deal with than a conventional transom saver and will definitely solve my problem and obviously help protect and extend the life of the hydraulics...I'm expecting to do extensive trailering. Thanks for the tips...looks like IBoats has several advertised for sale between $12 and $20. Already ordered them.
