What engine on what boat, which is rated for how much HP?? You may be riding a bomb with a short fuse!

If simple operation of the T&T flexes the transom, what do you think happens at full chat, Stinger?

You may need to rebuild your transom, go to less power and weight, or both.

Standing by.
Red sky at night. . .
JB

Re: transom flex

the boat is a 1977 stinger with an 85 hp mercury (merc850).

it is the origonal motor that came on the boat so i am sure it is rated for that.

the wood between the firberglass has rotted around the mounting bolts. i beleive the wood further outside the mounting bolts is still good. my idea is to bolt a metal plate inside the hull on the inside wall of the transom. i beleive this would disperse the weight and save me from having to remove the motor. has anyone ever done this.

Re: transom flex

I had thought that my 1988 Phantom had only minimal damage and it turned out to be major.
If your not sure, have a repair shop look at it.

Sounds like your transom may be rotted pretty baddley, if you take a screwdriver that is fairly sharp, an reach under inside the transom an try pushing the point through the glass. spot ck the transom working low to high, the screwdriver will go into the bad areas easily. you dont realy have to take the motor off to repair, because it all done on the inside. then go to a West marine store and they will have the info an supplies to do the job right. good luck.

Re: transom flex

i may be wrong but i thought the only way to properly redo the transom would require removal of the motor.

the transom is like a hunk of wood sandwiched between to sheets of fiberglass.
the only way to replace that wood is to lift off the motor and slide the wood out of the top of the transom and then slide a new piece in.

if there is a proper way of repairing without removing the motor i am interested.

i may attempt this myself. how much does a mer850 weigh.
and how do you lift it.
and what do you rest it on when you get it off

Re: transom flex

I have done this once when I got my first boat!First you have to remove the motor then you have to remove the rub rail and remove the screws that seperates the cap(top of the boat) you might need someone to help you to remove the motor and the cap. After you remove the rotten wood you need to clean the surface to make sure no grease or oil.Get a marine grade plywood and use some high quality two part expoxy and laminate the plywood back to the transom, you will need a few very large carpenter's clap to hold the wood until its cure!

With the help from my brother in-law we did everything in about 3 to 4 days but save over a thousand dollars!
Hope this helps!
