Transom Engine bracket effects on boat handling

Hi,

I'm looking at a 2000 Hydra-sports 24' CC that has a 200hp Oceanpro mounted on a Stainless Marine bracket. I don't see too many of these, and the boat is very reasonably priced. I just wonder how the boat handles with an extension bracket like this. Anyone have experience driving something like this?

Until about 6-7 months ago I had a 22 HS with a single 200 and really wished it had a bracket. Go for a ride, I think you'll be impressed. If you really want to be impressed, pick a day when it's nasty rough.

I am assuming you mean a jack plate; if that is the case, it was a HUGE improvement for my rig, a jack plate with 10" setback. Made a big difference in handling, especially in big water!

Hi Studly,

No, a jack plate just gives the engine lift, and a little setback. The engine bracket I'm talking about looks like it sets the engine back at least 1'-2'. The brand on the boat is Stainless Marine, and there are a couple of other brand names that make these.

If the bracket is only 1 - 2' make sure the motor clears the transom when fully tilted. For a V6 looper it should be at least 26 -28" back. A lot depends on how it's mounted, which model motor and if it's a full transom or not.

I saw a 24 HS with a twin bracket and the swim platform was even with the transom cutout. You could step over into the "splaswell" area and walk straight out on the platform. A great setup.

Thank's to all for your replies, I think I have a better understanding on the brackets. I wasn't sure about their performance on boats which may not have been designed for, but it seems only positive results are the norm.:)

Thank you
