OK not exactly a vintage motor, but just picked up another jw-17 Johnson seahorse 3hp with some type of transom bracket extension fitted, with the original thumb screws of the outboard fitted to the extension and nuts and bolts for the Johnson.
It looks a perfect fit for the outboard and the only reason for it I would think would be to turn the motor 360, without hitting the transom with the prop, would this be right, as a have never seen one as a permanent fixture on an outboard.

Your question properly belongs on another board but if a JW is used on the proper transom such an alteration would be completely unnecessary leading me to think it was an adaptation by a previous owner to use it in an application where it didn't belong.

If you'll be using it on a standard 15" transom inclined at between 12 & 15 degrees remove the alterations and return it to the original configuration.

The JW/Lightwin design is as near perfection for intended use imagineable. Used within design parameters nothing additional is needed or desired. Tom
