Transom angle.

I have the motor off my boat for stering cable replacement. the problem I have is this. The angle of the transom is toward the bow from the top of the transom,Or maby better stated the top of the transom is 2.5 " further to the stern than the bottom. I noticed that they had wedges under the motor where it bolts to the transom. I think they were put in upside down, they have the wide part of the wedge to the top of the transom, which increases the angle to such a degree that wen the boat is trimed out at the best for speed the trim pistons are nearly fully extended. I think I need to turn the wedges around. Right or wrong? When Installed as they wer the motor trims way back under the boat.

Re: Transom angle.

An average rig job uses no wedges. They're added to get a better bite for quicker take-off (fat end up) or for higher trim angles for speed (thin end up). Or to compensate for an odd transom angle.

Re: Transom angle.

Im thinking I have an odd transom angle it is more raked under then my other 3 bosts. Thats why im thinking thin end up or no wedges at all?
It does have a hole shot. hit the throttle and your topped out at 40mph in 8 sec. 88spec. on a 17' glass bassboat.

I would try it with no wedges as that the best way to go as long as you can reach the trim you need.

Re: Transom angle.

After rereading your post I'll ask like this; looking from the side of your boat (profile angel bow to your right or to say from starboard side) is the transom angeled like this \____> or this /_____> ?

From what you posted I think your saying it is angeled like this \____>.

Based on what you have said I would give the mounted position of the motor a serious look without the shims. Installed like you said (wide end up) they have only exagerated the already excessive transom angel you are saying the boat has. If the engine did still reach a proper trim angel before, I dont see where they are doing anything to help or hurt the attitude of trim operation.

Re: Transom angle.

You read it right RP. thats what im going to do. The boat has a problem getting on plane, I think thats what they were trying to cure. It dont plane out till 20mph. I think Im going to raise the motor one hole while Im at it. It apears to be about 1/2 hole too deep. Its not a big deal to move with my little hoist. I wondered if they were trying to make this !1_____> And just put the shims in upside down by accident, and never got around to changing it?

You might consider posting this setup and hole shot prob on the props forum. The wedges may have been used when a prop change may have been a better cure? The guys on the prop forum are pretty knowledgeable re: setups

Re: Transom angle.

Thanks guys. I dont know whether I have a prop problem or not, I havent been back on the water with this boat since fixing the tach. I guess ill put it back together without wedges and see where Im at with prop, might answer a lot of questions.

Re: Transom angle.

Mine is a Merc, but I measured from the bottom of the boat straight to the front of the skeg and it was 13" with both parallel to the shop floor. The boat punches out really fast and at WOT you can trim out far enough to loose speed. My engine is an '02 and has a rather large, set back transom bracket, from what I am used to with older engines.
Mark

Re: Transom angle.

I have motor off , still waiting on parts, so I cant measure, but I know I cant trim out till I loose speed, I dont think I can even reach max, speed. It will be intresting to play with when my stering comes in, Just wish it wasnt 20mi to water to test it, Cant gripe tho, befour this summer is over it may be 40 mi to water. :D

Re: Transom angle.

Nearest water is 20 miles but the lake is 11' low...useless. Next near is 24 mi but it is nothing but a sewer lake and overfished to boot. It's only 5 ft low but you can launch....just don't let the water splash on you when you are running.

50 miles away is lake Texoma, 89,000 acres, which is only 1.5 ft low but it's so big you have to have the Queen Mary to navigate it safely.

So you're not bad off. Grin.

Mark
