Transmission having trouble engaging in forward gear

Boat is a 2000 Cobalt 246
Volvo Penta 7.4 Gi fuel injected DP I/O....appx 450hrs

Hey guys...this is my first post here, so bear with me.

Recently I noticed the transmission struggling to engage into forward gear. The throttle will click into drive, but does not engage. If I get on the throttle a bit it will engage. Occasionally once I click the throttle into drive it will engage after a few seconds without raising rpms. It seems that if I have been driving in forward, shift into neutral, then back to forward it engages fine. It's when I go from reverse to forward that I have problems with. I haven't noticed any problems when shifting into reverse.

From the little bit of reading I've done, it looks like it narrows down to the bell housing. Is this correct? If so where do I go from here?

Could be nothing more than the shift cable being out of adjustment. Remove the plastic cover on the back of the drive and remove the props. Now start the engine (on muffs) and shift into forward. Make sure the shift mechanism goes all the way into gear, both forward and reverse. If not, you may need a new cable.

Thanks Don. Do you have/know where I could find some sort of manual to follow for this? If I end up having to replace the cable it always helps and saves time to have some sort of reference to follow.

Note: The eccentric should be horizontal in neutral.
