I have a Mercruiser 170, Alpha One and when I shift from forward to reverse it will tend to grind a little bit. Now it does not do this everytime, but I want to make sure what I should do for this, if it is anything to worry about?

Well......
Is this a new occurance?......
Let me put it this way.....
If you shift it firmly into gear it really should not grind & you should think about replacing your lower shift cable soon.....
If you are shifting tentatively, then it will grind...
Don't do that!........;)

Sorry I didn't give you some of that info the first time. This is my first boat, and had it out a few times last year, now about 3 times this year. I will check it the next time I go out and make sure that I am not being tentative when I shift it. You said that I should replace the cables...both upper and lower? I put switched to an alternator last year right after I bought it, and that has worked out great. Do you think the cables could be switched by someone who is somewhat mechanically inclined?

Yes.....
But they may be OK.....
Try this....
With out the engine running push the throttle until it clicks in gear.......
You probably won't do it tentatively, & that's how you should shift, one motion into gear.....
Your cables are most likely OK, esp the upper, they rarely go bad....
Here is a link for your drive, run the cursor over the lettered ections on page seven & click on the section that you want to view.....:)

I really do appreciate all the help that I get from all of you who are willing to help. I wouldn't feel near as comfortable with this boat and working on it without the help. I will give that a try and the link to the manual helps a bunch! Thanks again!

Re: Transmission "grinds" a little when shifting into reverse

When I first got my boat I shifted slowly thinking that is the best way to do it and quickly found out that if I did it with a smooth positive motion it would not grind. I have learned how to do it now and it never grinds.

Re: Transmission "grinds" a little when shifting into reverse

I appreciate all the help! I had the boat out this last weekend and paid closer attention to how I shifted gears. I didn't have any trouble with the gears grinding when I wasn't shifting "tentatively". Another one of those "newbies" things that I need to learn. Thanks again!
