I have a 5.7L Mercruiser with Alpha I outdrive.
Here's my problem. While towing one of my kids on the tube, I heard/felt gears "clunking". Initially I though I was hitting bottom, but as I pulled the throttle back to neutral the engine died. A quick look at the outdrive showed no strikes.
I started the engine back up thinking maybe it had shut down on low oil pressure (I was heavily loaded in the stern of the boat and plowing quite a bit). The engine started right up with a slight squeaking noise (not previously heard) that varied with RPM and went away after about a minute.
I then came up to full throttle to plane the boat. It went for about 500yds before one big clunk and engine died again as I pulled the throttle back to neutral.
Now when I start the engine up it runs fine, but does not go into gear. There is no normal clutch slip, no nothing as I try to put it into gear. Looking at the shift cables on top of the engine, they seem to be moving appropriately.
About a month ago, the marina took the engine out to replace the gimbal housing.
Any ideas and advice are greatly appreciated.
