Greetings,
There have been many mentions of Transmission Coolers in previous threads. My question, is there any benefit to installing a larger cooler than you need. Will it benefit the tranny by the additional vanes and keep it cooler? They come in many sizes and many tow ratings, but wouldn't you simply want to put the biggest one you can fit? Or in this case is bigger not always better?

Thanks,
Nav

Re: Transmission Coolers

Rule of thumb at the dealer was to add the total weight of trailer and vehicle and then use that total as a base number for size. Most aftermarket coolers list approx total towing weights on the package.

However in the north you must make sure that the cooler will not restrict the fluid during very cold starts.

Re: Transmission Coolers

Mike,

Basically, what I'm asking is will a cooler rated for a 10k-20k load, be more beneficial than a cooler rated for 5k-10k load, if in fact the load I'm working with is only say 6000lbs ?

Will the bigger one give me more cooling and thus extend the tranny life even more?

Down here in the humid south, we're more concerned with the ultra-high temperatures in the summer, than the non-existent snow in the winter :)

Thanks,
Nav

Yes, bigger is better.
I have known it snow in the sunshine state but no, you don't have to worry about the 10 to 20 below - you lucky Floridian.

Regards,
Mike
