Transmission clunking

I have recently obtained a 1984 Bayliner 2750 with a Volvo 270 outdrive and the transmission does not seem to be shifting as I would expect.
Occasionally it seems to be tricky to hit neutral when trying to start her up. Going into reverse needs a heavy hand and from forward to reverse or the other way around the transmission clunks.
Any ideas?

Re: Transmission clunking

Try adjusting your "shift throttle cable" and see if that get rid of the thunking noise, If you are running on muffs it's common to hear some noise, Try adjusting the cable first to see if it goes away, and how is your lower unit oil level, check that too.

Thanks, but at the risk of sounding ignorant (since I am new to these types of drives, I guess I am) how is the shift cable adjusted? It is a dual control, one for throttle and one for the gears.

Re: Transmission clunking

Start by purchasing a OEM manual - a necessity. Or, take a look here and see if you can download what you need:http://www.ebooksquad.com/?s=volvo+penta+270+workshop+manual
Don't bother yourself with the throttle cable yet. If it is smooth then you're good to go.
I'd be looking for a replacement cable right off the bat. Check your dealers and match up the end number's ( on the cable itself )to make sure you get the right one.
I believe you're going to need to pull the boat out of the water but I'm not too sure about the lower unit ( removal ) - that's what the manuals are for.

Thanks again. The manual is on order and I have been waiting for it.
I will check the cables when she is pulled out. Unfortunately our season is at its end and this boat is scheduled to be pulled out for the winter on Nov 4th
