My new Garmin works great when idling, but when I get on plane the fish finder doesn't work. The transduce is still in the water on plane. I mounted my transducer about 6 inches to the side of the motor on the transom.

Assuming the transducer is mounted so that it has a smooth flow of water under it, you should be able to adjust the gain or sensitivity to get a reading. If you are running fast in shallow water you may not get a good return. What model do you have?

Ten to one your xducer isn't getting a clean flow of water with no air bubbles in it.

most companies say to be at least 12" to the side of the motor to get clean water. I have had to move them out farther than that to get them to work. Also I have had to point the transducer down a little to get it to work.

I've already tried angling the transducer down more. Maybe I should move it farther from the motor?
