Transducer leaking?

Impressive forum! Got into some rough water with the boat the other day. Noticed the bilge pump kept going on every now and again. Never had it happen before, so I know it's a new problem. Got to looking at my hull after I pulled the boat out, and it looks like there may be some daylight coming in around where my transducer is mounted in the rear center of my Lund Pro V. Is this common? Can an old man fix this himself, or pay big bucks to have it done? Any ideas, including cost estimate would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Transducer leaking?

Quiller,

As rickdb1boat said boat construction would be helpful. Easiest way to see where the leak is, is to trailer the boat start putting water in the bildge, see where it comes out. Some people use food coloring to get a better idea.

Most fiberglass repairs can be done easily, I don't know about aluminum.

Once you find the leak, we can then talk about how to fix it.

Hope this helps.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Re: Transducer leaking?

So sorry, the boat is aluminum, with some kind of fandangled composite front end that Lund is so proud of. Transducer is mounted in the aluminum, in some black rubber seal thing. Thanks for your help.

Quiller,

Funky said it. NO, that's NOT normnal.

Remove the t-ducer and seal the holes with "Marine Tex". Run new screws in with the marine tex still soft.

You may have to go with the next larger screw. Remember-only use stainless screws.

Re: Transducer leaking?

Alot of transducers are mounted with a ½" thick plastic board so that when the transducer is moved or replaced the holes are drilled into the plastic and not the hull. If you need to remove your transducer to check for a leak anyway you might as well install the board in its place. The plastic also reduces hull vibration to the transducer and helps it to operate better. I have included a link to the product at Cabelas. Cabelas Fishfinder Accessories

Re: Transducer leaking?

thanks for the help all. It was a plastic gasket thingamagig around the transducer. A couple screws came loose is all. Of course, had to tear the floor out to remedy the situation, but I'm back in business. Thanks again
