Can you shorten a transducer cable without disrupting the signal? Mine must be 20ft long and I only need 5ft. Right now I have all extra cable coiled up, but its alot of cable to have lying on the deck.

Yes, Stratos, it can be done. It may require a new connector, depending on the type.

If you have not been trained in the installation of coaxial cable connectors take it to someone who has.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Check with the manufacturer. Some don't want you to cut them because the resistance from the cabling is figured in with the transducer for performance. I have a scanning Interphase unit on my boat (admittedly higher tech) but they warn not to cut the cable due to likely reduced performance.

Hi 87

Alaskaskiff is right. The resonance of the circuit is changed with cable length. A good tech can probably tune the finder to compensate, but is it worth all the effort and expence?

Yea, ditto to Schematic. And, as I have found out the hard way, when you shorten a cable like that, you later end up needing it long again, because you want to move your fishfinder, you go to sell it to someone else, and so on.

Also, when you store the cord, do not wind the cable into coils. "Zig-zag" it in approx. 1 foot lengths each way, and put a wire tie in the middle of the bundle to hold it together. Then you can fasten it under your dash, etc. to store the extra cable.

Sometimes when you coil the cable, it also affects the impedance of the cable (it makes it act like a transformer, electrically speaking).
