Just got a Garmin GPSMAP 178c( from work, new in the box for $50!!!!!)

I need to get an antenna for the GPS but those are $20 all day long on Ebay so not too bad.

It came with a dual frequency transducer, 50-200 but I river fish and deep for me is 30'.

Will this one work okay for me or should I get a single 200 frequency one?

Thanks.

Re: Tranducer question

Yes, the 200 kHz would fine for your application, but some food for thought.

Right around 25 feet is where I see an advantage in running split screen using both frequencies when fishing.

At 200 kHz your typical transducer is producing a very narrow field of view. When running 50 kHz your field of view is roughly double that at 200 kHz. Not only do you get a larger view of what?s beneath you but also give you a good indication if the target is right under the transducer or off to one side or the other.

A lot of times you?ll see fish being marked on the 50 kHz screen but not the 200 kHz screen. What that tells that the target is outside the 200 kHz field of view yet still inside the 50 kHz field of view. Narrows down the target location considerably. Pretty handy tool when trolling.

Re: Tranducer question

Cool, putting it on the boat now and I started with the head and worked back hoping someone would answer.

Took forever to work the old cables out of the wiring loom.

Just wanted to make sure the dual will work for me before I mount it, the book on this thing is 1/2'' thick so I have some reading to do, hopefully you can toggle between the 2.

Ordered a GPS antenna off Ebay and I am hoping that gets here before Sat when I go out.

This thing is way cool, color GPS/fishfinder, technically it was discontinued in 2007(hence the price) but it has never been turned on and my old Magellan 325 finnally pooped 2 weeks ago so it will be nice to have GPS again.

Thanks dingbat.
