Saw a guy earlier this week towing a nice what looked like about a 20 ft i/o Bayliner. As he attempts to make a rather fast left turn into a side street the boat rolls off the trailer sideways onto the street. It looked like he forgot to hook up the rear tiedowns . Too bad it WAS a nice boat.

Re: Trailering accident

A friend of mine bought an old boat and didn't think it important enough to tie it down good for the short trip home. A trailer spring broke, and pitched the boat like a spear right into the grill of an oncoming soccer van. Wiped out both the boat and the van.

I guarantee you that he was in a hurry... and that where 90% of the SHT come from.

I don't hurry anymore when prepping for launch, or trailering the boat at the end of the day. I double check everything before and after being on the water, it really helps.

Always something to be learned.
It is no joke and if any of you think it can't or will never happen to you, then you are and will be in for a rude awaking...
How do I know this?
Well....

Re: Trailering accident

sorry about your loss, but I can't help but notice the snapped "motorcycle straps" that were the tie-downs. I use them too, occasionally, but don't have a lot of confidence in them. In your case, probably nothing would have stopped it.

I used boat buckles, they were a bit aged. but nothing is going to hold a boat that wants to go, short of logging chains....which would probably just tear the boat. at least a ditch surfed boat is usable after repairs....

Everytime I see this pic of your plight just makes say "man... what a tough day to get through."

You can plan for the worst and sometimes the worst happens... glad it all worked out for you in the end and no one got hurt!!!

Re: Trailering accident

mass of boat >>>> mass of trailer. it probably wouldn't have made much difference if it had been tied down, if you do something stupid enough its going to go over either way.

Re: Trailering accident

...due to a dip in the road...WHAT? Sounds more like due to excessive speed and improper ball hitch size or coupler not engaged/locked correctly. In any case, completely preventable. And to add salt to his wounds...he couldn't even spell the name of the boat in his ad correctly...TWICE!
