Trailer Wiring

I have a tandem trailer and I launch in salt water nearly always. My trailer wiring has been repaired by me numerous times and now I will need to replace the entire harness. The current wiring runs inside of the frames. I am considering running the wiring outside of the frame routed through PVC electrical conduit. The reason I am considering PVC conduit is that I want to end up with the wiring in a waterproof jacket. Also, I think the conduit will make a neat installation and will be easy to service. Has anyone done this and if so, what are the advantages or drawbacks if any. I was thinking of installing the wiring outside of the frame in the black plastic split tubing but that would not be waterproof and I don't think it would look very neat.

I would not put the wiring in a conduit. You'll never seal it and water will then sit in it.

I believe open conduit would be better. At least that way you can rinse it.

Re: Trailer Wiring

You would do much better using marine rated tinned wire. Most trailers have non tinned wire which corrodes quickly. Using tinned wire, LED lights, Ancor waterproof crimp connectors and dielectric grease on all contacts will yield the best results.
Personally I like inside the frame as it protects the wiring from road and launch ramp damage. If you were to use PVC as a conduit material I would leave the ends open so it could drain.
